What have we successively called “psychology” from the middle of the sixteenth century until the discipline was established and began, at the end of the nineteenth century, to resemble what we recognise today? That is what this paper proposes to examine by analysing the origin of the word, by examining the metaphysical debates to which it gave rise and by retracing the flow of ideas, the authors and the schools which appropriated them throughout this period in the large European countries.
